5 steps to keep your skin hydrated

Say goodbye to dry, rough skin! Follow these tips for firm, healthy looking skin.

Dryness is one of the main causes for the increased appearance of wrinkles and fine lines. Your body has natural mechanisms to keep your skin hydrated, but these are not enough for the average woman leading a modern life. Making sure your skin stays hydrated throughout the day can be quite a challenge, but there are small things you can do to work towards that goal without sacrificing too much time or spending too much money. Incorporate the following tips to your daily routine:

1. Drink enough water.

The first step to keep any part of your body hydrated is to drink enough water. Make sure to drink at least 2.0 liters (about 8 cups or 68 ounces) and to spread your water consumption throughout the day; do not chug down full bottles of water at a time! Also, coupling your water intake with the consumption of nutrients can help increase the amount of H2O that is retained, so drink plenty of water while you eat or add bits of fruit to your infusions to help yourself achieve maximum water absorption.

2. Use the right soap or cleanser.

Washing is necessary in order to remove any substance that your face may have come in contact with during the day, such as pollution, dirt, chemicals, as well as makeup and even excess skin care products. Use neutral soaps or cleansers with natural ingredients that are gentle on the skin. Any hydrating ingredients can be a plus, but remember that you will be washing all of that off so the most important thing is that your soap or cleanser is right for your skin type and avoids irritating or drying the skin too much. Also, don’t over do it! It is ok to wash your face just once a day.

3. Protect yourself from the sun.

This is probably the most important tip because the skin loses moisture through evaporation due to exposure to heat from the environment. You should avoid staying out in the sun for prolonged periods of time or at all, if possible. If you absolutely must step out of the shade, try to wear sunglasses and a wide brim hat. Sun radiation is also the source of most of the damage that causes the skin to lose elasticity and firmness, destroying the collagen that retains moisture within the skin and giving way to fine lines, wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, etc. Use a sunscreen that is right for your skin type with a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of at least 30. You should apply it as part of your daily routine (even when indoors) and reapply it anytime you need to go out in the sun.

4. Exfoliate.

An exfoliating treatment will help remove dead skin cells from your face, helping your skin look younger and healthier, but also priming your skin to absorb any other skin care component that is applied to it. It is not necessary to exfoliate everyday; it is better if you limit this step to just once or (at most) twice a week. You can also make something special of it and complement the occasion with a facial massage that will also improve hydration by promoting blood circulation and lymphatic drainage.

5. Use a hydrating moisturizer.

Needless to say, a moisturizing product will be the best tool in your arsenal to fight dry skin. You should apply it specially in the morning before you go out and also at night before going to bed, but really, as long as your moisturizer is right for your type of skin and feels comfortable you may apply it as often as you need. This is very important because if your moisturizer doesn’t feel good sitting on your skin, then you will not apply it enough to reap its benefits. It’s always a journey to find the skin care products that really feel right but since I discovered the Mary Kay Clinical Solutions® HA + Ceramide Hydrator I haven’t felt the need to try anything else to keep my face hydrated. Not only does it seal the moisture in , but the ceramides help restore the skin barrier and it actually draws moisture from the environment thanks to Hyaluronic Acid (HA) the secret to hydration!

Remember that it’s never too early or too late to start caring for your skin. Get busy applying these tips and in no time you will start looking and feeling fresher everyday!
